他从QTL初步定位,精细定位,QTL克隆逐步深入到QTL的分子机理剖析,在水稻产量遗传基础和分子生物学基础解析方面做出了一定的成绩:揭示了单位点QTL和互作是水稻产量性状重要遗传基础,提出了水稻产量等复杂数量性状也受主效基因/QTL控制的假说。构建了一系列主效QTL 的近等基因系,精细定位了多个产量相关QTL,图位克隆了控制株高,开花期和每穗粒数的多效性基因Ghd7,Ghd8和Ghd7.1和粒型基因GS3,发现Ghd7,Ghd8和Ghd7.1不同效应的等位基因在自然界具有特定的地理分布特点。创建了基于高世代重组自交系内部表型变异构建近等基因系的新方法。参与克隆了正调控水稻种子大小、粒重和产量的基因GS5。Ghd7研究论文被评为2008年中国基础研究 10大新闻,而GS5的克隆被评为2011年度“中国高等学校十大科技进展”。研究结果在Nat Genet,Annu Rev Plant Biol,PNAS,Cell Res,New Phytol, Mol Plant,PLoS ONE,Genetics,Theor Appl Genet,BMC Plant Biol,J Integr Plant Biol等国内外杂志上发表论文80余篇,被引用近2000次,以第1作者和通讯作者身份发表论文50余篇。
